Short-Term Monitoring to Guide Your Next Step in Care

Observation services at Stilwell Memorial Hospital provide short-term monitoring and care for patients whose condition needs closer evaluation before the next decision is made. Our team watches your symptoms, runs the tests your physician orders, and determines whether you can safely return home or need a transfer to the facility best equipped for your continued care — all while you stay close to home.

What Are Observation Services?

Observation is a short-term, outpatient service in which our care team closely monitors your condition over a period of hours. It gives your physician the time and information to decide the safest next step in your care, rather than admitting you before that decision can be made.

As a Rural Emergency Hospital, Stilwell Memorial Hospital provides emergency and observation care instead of standard inpatient admission. Observation lets us keep you monitored and supported here in Stilwell while your physician determines what you need.

Why Would I Be Placed in Observation Instead of Being Admitted?

Because your physician needs more time to understand what is happening before deciding on the right level of care. Some conditions are not ready for a patient to go home, but also do not yet call for extended inpatient treatment. Observation bridges that gap.

During this time, your care team gathers the information needed to make a safe, confident decision — whether that means sending you home with a clear plan or arranging a transfer for more specialized care.

What Happens During Observation?

Your observation stay generally follows four steps:

  1. Evaluation — Your physician assesses your condition and decides that closer monitoring is needed.
  2. Monitoring — Our team keeps watch over your symptoms and vital signs throughout your stay.
  3. Testing — Any labs, imaging, or other tests your physician orders are completed and reviewed.
  4. Decision — Based on how you respond, your physician decides whether you can go home or need a transfer for further care.

Observation vs. Inpatient Admission: What’s the Difference?

Observation and inpatient admission are not the same. Observation is a short-term outpatient service; inpatient admission is extended hospital care. Here is how they compare.

How Long Does Observation Usually Last?

Observation is meant to be short — often less than 24 hours. The exact length depends on your condition and how you respond to care. Your physician will keep you informed and make the decision to discharge or transfer you as soon as it is safe to do so.

What Happens After Observation?

After observation, one of two things happens: you are discharged to go home, or you are transferred to another facility for the care you need. Your care team will walk you through whichever applies.

  • You go home. If your condition is stable, you are discharged with clear instructions and any follow-up your physician recommends.
  • You are transferred. If you need specialized or extended inpatient care, our team stabilizes your condition and coordinates a transfer to the hospital best equipped for your needs. A transfer does not mean you received poor care — it means we are making sure you get exactly the care you need.

Is Observation the Same as Being Admitted to the Hospital?

No. Even if you stay for several hours or overnight, observation is a short-term outpatient service, not an inpatient admission. If you have questions about how your observation stay is billed or covered, please call us at (918) 696-3101 and our Patient Financial Services team will be glad to help.
