Stilwell Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit Rural Emergency Hospital, deeply rooted in the Stilwell and Adair County communities we have served for generations. Our commitment is simple: to provide healthcare to everyone we serve in a value-driven, quality-minded manner, and to ensure access to high-quality care regardless of color, race, or religion.
In 2026, Stilwell Memorial Hospital transitioned to a Rural Emergency Hospital, allowing us to continue providing around-the-clock emergency care while expanding outpatient services and ensuring access to healthcare for our rural communities.
As a Rural Emergency Hospital, our Emergency Room is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We also provide observation, laboratory, imaging, and a growing range of outpatient services close to home. When a patient needs specialized or extended inpatient care, our team stabilizes their condition and coordinates a transfer to the facility best equipped for their needs.
We continually review our mission and goals, and work to recruit and develop provider practices for the communities we serve, so that we are always offering the care our community needs most.
When to Go to the ER vs. the Clinic
Go to the Emergency Room for:
- Chest pain or pressure
- Trouble breathing
- Signs of a stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech)
- Severe bleeding or deep wounds
- Broken bones or serious injuries
- Head injuries, or a sudden loss of consciousness
- Severe pain, high fever, or a serious allergic reaction
Go to the Physicians' Clinic for:
- Checkups and routine wellness visits
- Colds, flu, and minor illnesses
- Prescription refills and medication questions
- Managing ongoing conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure
- Follow-up appointments
- Minor aches, sprains, and everyday concerns
Understanding Patient Transfers
Sometimes a patient needs specialized inpatient care or surgery that’s best provided at a larger facility. When that happens, it does not mean a patient received poor care—it means we’re making sure they get exactly the care they need.
If you require specialized inpatient care or surgery, our emergency team will stabilize your condition and coordinate a transfer to the hospital best equipped for your needs. Stabilizing and transferring a patient is standard, high-quality medical practice, and our team stays involved to make the process as smooth as possible.
